1. Process description

Micro-organisms and most of the odorous molecules are naturally destroyed by air ions. These ions can be artificially produced by ionisers, which have the capacity to ionise the oxygen molecules at voltages as high as 2500V. See Air ionisation


In order to accelerate the VOC oxidation with air ionisers, a special catalyst is integrated on the downstream side of the ion generator, in this case ionisation lamps.


The Aeromat 400 - CAT is a wall unit able to abate the VOCs of a room of roughly 30m3.

Iono-catalysis systems integrable in air ducts are developped on request.


The contaminated air comes first into contact with the ioniser, which initiates the oxidation process. A multilayer catalyst cassette completes this process, liberating carbon dioxide.


After several air recirculations through the system, the VOC content in the air is drastically abated.


2. Applications

  • Hospital rooms decontaminated with formaldehyde
  • Laboratories and small production areas contaminated with VOCs
  • Private rooms contaminated with VOC releasing materials

3. Validation study

This concept has been validated in an hospital still using formaldehyde to sterilize critical rooms, like surgical rooms. The goal was to abate the formaldehyde concentration below 0.1ppm in less than 1h. This goal has been achieved in only 40' !


Tests with xylene have shown that this more complex molecule needs more time to achieve the same abatement
